June 26, 2020 Return to School Fall Planning Update

Dear Cros-Lex Families:

This message is sent to update families as we continue our planning for the return to school in the fall. The District COVID-19 Return to School Planning Committee comprised of teachers, parent(s), administrators, and board members have met multiple times as we plan for the reopening of our school’s in the fall. I want to emphasize, our primary goal is to return all students and staff at the same time, safely, to all of our schools in the fall, and as close to normal as possible. The District will follow the requirements set forth by the Michigan State Legislature and Executive Branch, as well as ensure the District health and safety practices are consistent with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services recommendations, and appropriate to the actual health conditions of our community.

On June 30th, we anticipate Governor Gretchen Whitmer to release “Michigan’s Return to School Roadmap” which is intended to provide more specific guidance to school districts across the state as we plan for the reopening of our school’s in the fall. Beginning July 1st, and after the release of “Michigan’s Return to School Roadmap” is available, the Cros-Lex COVID-19 Return to School Planning Committee will convene to align our plans with the document from the state.

The well-being, health, and safety of everyone remains the most important priority not only during normal times, but even more so as we continue to face the challenges of the Global Coronavirus Pandemic. During our previous planning meetings, the district committee has reviewed parent and staff surveys, networked with other local school districts in our region, regularly monitored the latest information from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, The Michigan Department of Education, and developed three broad contingency plans. The hard work and dedication of the committee members is focused on providing a challenging educational learning environment for all students to achieve their maximum potential, all in a safe and welcoming environment. I am confident that Cros-Lex’s outstanding staff will prepare together to “blaze a trail to excellence” for our students and the families we serve and as one Pioneer family!

To reiterate, until the state releases the “Michigan’s Return to School Roadmap”, our plans will be still progressing. Please understand that our primary goal (if permitted by the State) is to have our students return to school for in person face to face instruction this fall. Until more direction is given from the State, the three scenario plans below are available for your review.

Three Fall 2020 Return to School Scenarios:

  • Scenario 1 Face to Face -

    • All students return to school, every day all day as usual.

    • Curriculum taught by classroom teachers.

    • Follow state and local health and safety guidelines and regulations to keep students, families and staff healthy and safe.

    • Common Learning Management System to produce consistency via our new Brightspace platform also used by Michigan Virtual School.

    • Focus on social-emotional learning and mental wellbeing of students and staff.

    • The District provides technology devices to students/families in need.

  • Scenario 2 Hybrid -

    • Combination of in-person and remote learning

    • Reduce class sizes by having students attend alternating days of face-to-face instruction to allow for social distancing.

    • Follow state and local health and safety guidelines and regulations to keep families, students, and staff safe.

    • Common Learning Management System to produce consistency via our new Brightspace platform also used by Michigan Virtual School.

    • The District provides technology devices to students/families in need.

  • Scenario 3 Remote - Distance Learning

    • All students learning remotely per state requirements to keep students, families, and staff safe.

    • Combination of teacher guided lessons, on-line work, and independent practice.

    • Common Learning Management System to produce consistency via our new Brightspace platform also used by Michigan Virtual School.

    • Focus on social-emotional learning and mental wellbeing of students and staff.

    • The District provides technology devices to students/families in need.

If the COVID-19 Pandemic worsens during the 2020-21 school year, and school districts are required to return to partial or full remote learning, Scenarios 1 and 2 will be built to adjust to remote-distance learning as outlined in Scenario 3. Also, if families choose to learn remotely rather than return to school, we will be able to offer a comprehensive virtual learning environment from our state accredited schools and educational programs.

As always, please feel free to contact me with any suggestions or questions you may have, and look for further  updates in the coming weeks.

Thank you, and Go Pioneers!
